Ebook – Think Like an AI (Part 1)

Think Like an AI, Part 1: Learn the Math Behind AI by Building 8 Python Games

How does Spotify know your next favorite song? How does Gmail catch spam? How does ChatGPT pick its next word?

It isn’t magic. It’s counting, measuring and stepping downhill, and you can build every piece yourself.

Think Like an AI teaches beginners the real ideas behind modern AI through eight small Python games. You won’t need heavy libraries or a math degree. You use plain Python, everyday math explained without jargon, and ChatGPT or Gemini as your coding partner.

What you’ll build

  1. Loot Chest Roller: Set up your coding lab, roll for rare loot, and learn to read error messages calmly. (Probability and sampling)
  2. Mind-Reading Number Game: A bot that guesses any number from 1 to 100 in 7 tries. (Binary search)
  3. Monster Chase: A monster hunts you across a grid. (Distance and vectors, the math behind recommendations)
  4. Creature Sorter: Sort dragons from slimes using data from a file. (Classification with nearest neighbors)
  5. Rock-Paper-Scissors Mind Reader: A bot that learns your habits and beats you. (Prediction from probability)
  6. Hot-and-Cold Treasure Hunter: Find buried treasure using only “warmer” and “colder.” (Gradient descent, how models learn)
  7. Spam vs Ham Detector: A filter that learns to spot scam messages from ten examples. (Naive Bayes)
  8. Word Wizard: A story generator that writes one word at a time. (Markov chains, how chatbots predict text)

Every chapter includes

  • Try-it-by-hand puzzles, so the math clicks before you write any code
  • Short scripts with the expected output, so you know when you’ve got it right
  • Level Up prompts for ChatGPT or Gemini, plus how to check what the AI gives you
  • A real-world tie-in showing how Google, Netflix, Spotify and others use the same idea
  • Boss Challenges to prove you’ve mastered it
  • A Teacher/Parent Toolkit with learning goals, common roadblocks and their fixes, classroom extensions, and age rules for AI tools

Who it’s for

Curious beginners or anyone aged 13 and up with no coding experience, and the parents, homeschoolers and teachers who learn alongside them. If you can add, subtract, multiply and divide, you’re ready.

What you need

A Windows or Mac computer, plus Python and VSCode, which are both free (Chapter 1 walks you through setup). A free ChatGPT or Gemini account is optional and is used in the Level Up sections.

Format: a PDF with clickable contents, a glossary of 39 key terms, and links to every source. Readers, parents and teachers may use and adapt the code for personal and classroom learning.

Part 1 of 3 . Part 2 adds libraries and real interfaces: an unbeatable tic-tac-toe game, web apps, and asking questions about your data. Part 3 covers how to tell when AI gets it wrong and finishes with your own AI Arcade.
